What is Sleep 101?
We all sleep. But all of us don’t necessarily understand what sleep is and how it works. We all know that sleep is indispensable to our physical and mental health. But all of us don’t necessarily understand why and how sleep is tied with heath. We all are aware that we need to sleep better. But all of us don’t necessarily know why and how to get quality sleep. And so, we need to start with the basics – the what’s, how’s, and why’s of sleep – in other words, Sleep 101.
What Do We Cover?
In this broadly categorized section, we cover topics including, but not limited to:
- Sleep Working – Types (REM and non-REM), Stages (light and deep), Cycles (alternating periods of light and deep sleep), Mechanisms (circadian rhythm and homeostasis)
- Sleep & Health – Functions (restoration, memory processing, dreaming), Factors (internal, external, genetic), Hygiene (regimen, routine, environment)
- Sleep Disorders – Insomnias, Hypersomnias, Parasomnias, Sleep-related Movement Disorders, Sleep-related Breathing Disorders, and Circadian Rhythm Sleep-wake Disorders
- Sleep Help – Medication (drugs, narcotics, aids), Non-medication (machines, therapies, products), Information (expert advice, science news, scholarly articles)
- Sleep Resources – Guides, Books, Publications, Studies, and Websites
Why Do We Cover What We Do?
As the name suggests, Sleep 101 is where we give you an overview of sleep.
We provide an introduction to sleep as a topic and talk about all the basics (concepts and principles) you need to know. This is to help you understand sleep (how the body works while asleep), why it affects health (sleep science), how it affects health (sleep functions), why we need to sleep better (sleep benefits), and how do we go about doing so (sleep hygiene). If we talk about sleep disorders, we don’t just list them out and explain them; we also talk about diagnosis and risks. We do so because we believe that to understand things better, we need to take a holistic approach.
How Do We Cover What We Do?
In Sleep 101, our approach to sleep is:
- Simple – We understand that there can be something as too much and too confusing information. And so, we endeavor to present sleep-related information in an easy-to-understand language and manner.
- Practical – We bother more and learn best when information is relevant to us. And so, we aim to provide practical solutions to practical needs and problems.
- Systematic – We also understand that information is no use if it is all over the place. And so we take a systematic approach to covering sleep-related topics.
- Comprehensive – We appreciate the fact that you do not want to be looking at different places for all that you need to know. We aim to be a one-stop databank on sleep by taking a holistic approach to it.
- Scientific approach – Sleep science is developing even as you read. And so, we make it a point to stay abreast and keep you up-to-date with the latest research in the world of sleep.
What Do You Stand To Gain From It?
With Sleep 101, you will acquire:
- Insight – You will understand sleep, learning new things, and becoming better acquainted with things you already know.
- Knowledge – You will comprehend things better since we provide access to qualitative (over quantitative) sleep information
- Awareness – You will become increasingly aware of your own bodily functions in relation to the sleep information you read.
- Tips – You will find practical answers and solutions to everyday sleep questions and problems.
- Better Sleep – When you know better, you do better, so, ultimately, your experience with us should culminate in a better sleeping experience for you and your family.
